How long before a new garden looks finished?

The version in your head has no timeline attached to it.

You can already walk through it. The planting is deep and settled, the grasses lean over the path edge so you have to brush past them, the hedge is a solid green wall with no gaps at the bottom. The tree throws enough shade by mid-afternoon that you move the chairs under it without thinking. Everything touches everything else. Nothing looks placed.

That garden exists the moment somebody shows you the drawing. And it is the version you carry around for the next two years while the real one gets on with it.

The real one starts thin. Bare mulch between plants. A hedge that is a row of individuals rather than a line. A tree that is unmistakeably a young tree. Most people are not warned about this, and the gap between the render and the first summer is where disappointment lives.

But that finished garden doesn’t come without your patience, and some decisions only you can make – so here is the honest timeline, layer by layer, and what changes it.


Quick answer: A new garden looks presentable immediately, fills in properly at three years, and reaches the version in the drawing at five to seven. Grasses and perennials mature in three seasons under the old sleep, creep, leap pattern. Hedges close in three to five years. Trees need roughly one year per 25mm of trunk thickness just to root in, before growth starts in earnest.


What is finished on the day the builders leave?

Everything that was built rather than grown.

Paving, steps, walls, decking, water, lighting, levels, gates, fencing. That layer arrives complete and never looks better than it does in month one, because nothing has weathered yet. So does the lawn, near enough, if it went down as turf.

Which gives a useful figure for the first day: in most private gardens the built layer is somewhere between 50 and 70 per cent of the budget and close to 100 per cent of what makes a garden look finished. That is why a garden with strong bones photographs well in its first spring even when the planting is knee high. The structure is doing the looking-finished, and the plants are still arriving.


Grasses, perennials, groundcover and anything herbaceous. One growing season for a respectable showing, three for the real thing.

Growers have a shorthand for how perennials behave in their first three years: sleep, creep, leap. Year one the plant is building roots and putting almost nothing above ground. Year two it flowers, but not at full size. Year three it reaches its proper dimensions and does what the plant label promised.

So the flowering layer of your garden is on a three-year clock, and the first of those years is the one that looks like a mistake. Nothing has gone wrong. The plant is spending its energy 300mm below where you are looking.

Groundcovers move faster than most people expect and will knit across open mulch in one or two seasons, provided they were planted close enough together to meet. That last part is a design decision, and it is one of the few real levers on how quickly the beds close over.

How long does a hedge take to close?

Three to five years to become a hedge rather than a row of plants, for most of the commonly used species.

The arithmetic is straightforward. A hedge plant putting on 30 to 50cm a year, planted at 900mm centres, needs to grow roughly 450mm sideways in each direction to meet its neighbours. Two to three seasons of sideways growth, then another season or two of clipping before the face knits tight enough to stop you seeing through it.

You can buy that time. Pre-grown instant hedging, delivered as a continuous trough of clipped plants, gives you a finished hedge on day one at several times the cost per metre of standard stock. For a boundary that has to screen a neighbouring window from the first week, some clients decide that is money well spent. For a hedge nobody will look at closely for three years, it rarely is.

Planting closer together does not speed things up as much as it seems it should. Tighter spacing closes the row a season earlier and then leaves the plants competing with each other for the next thirty years, which shows up later as thin bases and uneven growth.

How long do trees take?

Longer than everything else, and the number depends on what you want the tree to do.

There is a rule of thumb from arboricultural research, first proposed by Watson in 1985 and confirmed by Gilman in 1992, that a transplanted tree needs about one year per 25mm of trunk thickness to fully re-establish its roots in the surrounding soil. In warm climates that shortens to around three to six months per 25mm. In cool-temperate climates it is a year or more.

So a tree with a 100mm trunk, the kind of specimen size that gets craned into a finished garden, can spend three to four years doing very little visible growing while it rebuilds a root system to match the crown it arrived with. It looks the same in year three as it did on day one, and clients read that as failure. It is the tree doing exactly what it should.

After that it moves. Shade you can sit under: 5 to 10 years for a fast-growing species, 15 to 25 for a slow one, and the same tree in a warm climate against a cold one can differ by half again.

The research also carries a finding that surprises people who have just paid for a big tree. Large and small trees put out roots at similar rates, so the larger tree simply has more catching up to do. Plant a 40mm and a 100mm specimen side by side and the gap between them narrows every year. On a long enough view they converge, though on a garden view they usually do not, and buying the bigger tree is still the right call when you need presence now.

Does spending more money make it faster?

Up to a point, and the point arrives sooner than most people expect.

What money reliably buys you on day one:

  • Instant hedging, delivered pre-grown and clipped.
  • Semi-mature specimen trees, craned in.
  • Turf instead of seed, so the lawn is walkable in 2 to 4 weeks rather than a season.
  • More plants, planted closer, so there is no bare mulch showing on day one.
  • Deeper mulch and better edges, which is what stops a young garden looking like a building site.

What money will not buy:

  • A hedge base that has thickened through three years of clipping.
  • The particular density a grass clump reaches in its fourth summer.
  • A tree canopy at any size larger than a crane can lift and a root ball can support.
  • Bark texture, lichen, and the settling of stone that makes an old garden feel old.

The first list is real. The second list is why a garden built to a five-year view will beat a garden built to a one-year view, every time, on the same budget.

So when is it finished?

It reaches the drawing at around five to seven years, and it is never finished after that in the way a building is finished.

A useful way to hold it:

  • Year 1. Structure complete, planting thin, mulch visible everywhere. Photographs better than it looks in person.
  • Year 2. Beds begin to close. Perennials flower properly. The hedge is still a row.
  • Year 3. The planting looks like planting rather than a collection of individual plants. Most clients stop worrying somewhere in this year.
  • Years 5 to 7. The garden in the drawing. Hedges solid, beds full, trees making shade.
  • Year 10 and on. Trees dominate and things need editing. Shrubs that have outgrown their spot come out. This is normal maintenance for a garden, not a design failure.

A design that is any good has already accounted for year ten, which is the main reason plants get put further apart than looks right on planting day.

Can the design make year one look better?

Yes, and this is where most of the difference is made.

The techniques are not complicated. Repetition and massing, so the eye sees drifts rather than gaps. Enough evergreen structure to hold the picture through winter while the herbaceous layer is absent. Generous groundcover between the slower plants. Lighting, which flatters a young garden more than a mature one because it picks out form rather than mass. And getting the proportion right between built and grown, so that on day one you are looking mostly at things that are already complete.

A full landscape design should show you the garden at planting and at maturity, and should tell you which year each part of it arrives. If a drawing only shows you the finished version, ask what year that is.

Common questions

Will watering and feeding make it grow in faster?

They stop it growing slower, which is not the same thing. Consistent water through the first two summers is the single biggest factor in whether new planting establishes on schedule or spends a year recovering. Feeding a stressed plant does not speed it up and can make things worse.

What if I am selling the house in two years?

Then plan for year two rather than year seven, which is a legitimate brief and changes the plant list considerably. More instant hedging, more evergreen, faster species, denser planting, and a bigger share of the budget in the built layer. Say so at the first meeting, because it is not a decision that can be reversed later.

Should I plant temporary filler plants and remove them later?

It works, on the condition that somebody removes them. Short-lived fast fillers between slow permanent plants are standard practice, and the failure mode is that nobody takes them out and the permanent planting gets crowded out by the temporary stuff.

How long before a hedge screens a neighbour’s window?

Depends where you start. Planting at 1.5m tall and wanting 2.5m of screening, at 30 to 50cm a year, is two to three years to height and a further season or two before the face is solid. Starting at 500mm makes it five years or more. Upper-storey privacy is the one place instant hedging usually pays for itself.

Does a garden in a warm climate fill in faster?

Considerably. The same planting plan can reach maturity in half the time in a warm climate compared with a cold one, and tree establishment research puts the difference at roughly three months per 25mm of trunk in the warmest zones against a year or more in the coldest. Longer growing seasons, more growth per year.

Every garden goes through a thin year. Knowing it is coming is what gets people through it, The plan that looks too sparse on planting day is usually the one that looks right in year five.
